Mary Frances “Granny” Merryman June 6, 1937 – May 3, 2026 Mary Frances Merryman, known and loved by everybody as “Granny,” was born on June 6, 1937, in Florala, Alabama, and went home to be with the Lord on May 3, 2026, in Trussville, Alabama, surrounded by her family. Granny was raised in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, where she attended Caney Creek Baptist Church. She often shared fond memories of growing up in the country on a farm, surrounded by her aunts, uncles, and cousins—a time in her life she deeply cherished. In 1964, she graduated from beauty school and began her career as a hairdresser at New York Hair Design in Tallahassee, Florida. She dedicated many years to her craft before eventually opening LA Hair Studio alongside her beloved husband, Richard, with whom she shared 22 wonderful years of marriage. Granny adored her dogs, loved listening to Elvis, and never passed up an opportunity to play the slots at the casino. She had a special way of calling everyone “baby,” a simple word that carried comfort, belonging, and affection to all who knew her. Nothing in this world meant more to her than her family. Her great-grandbabies—Carter, Avery, Wells, and Taylor—were the light of her life. She would talk about them to anyone who would listen. Through every season of life, Granny remained a good and faithful servant. She found comfort in reading her Bible, especially Psalm 23, and she never missed an opportunity to share her love for Jesus with others. Granny was loved and cared for by her granddaughters, Lindsey Page (Tyler) and Leigh Tillman (Perry), whose devotion brought her great comfort. The family is grateful for her caregivers—Cynthia, Nora, Bernadette, and Tan—for the love, kindness, and care they gave her. We would also like to thank her hospice nursing team. Granny was preceded in death by the love of her life, Richard Merryman; her son, Carlton Jackson; and her daughter-in-law, Lisa Crowder Jackson. We will miss her stories, her laughter, and hearing her call us “baby.” There will never be another Granny quite like her.
