Debra Lynn Mathews

Debra (Debbie) Lynn Mathews, 71, of Springville, Alabama, passed away into the arms of her Heavenly Father on January 27, 2024, in Birmingham, Alabama. Debbie was surrounded by her family, singing to the Lord as she transitioned to her heavenly home. She is preceded in death by her father, William Gilmer and her mother, Mary Helen Gilmer. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Harold Irvin Mathews Junior; son, Harold Irvin Mathews, III (Tammy); daughter, Traci Lynn Creel (Jason); son, William Tyler Mathews (Lindsay) and her beloved grandchildren, Becca, Gracie, Micah, Amelia, Carson, Sadie, Lyla, Mary Ellen and Josiah. Debbie was born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 30, 1952. She married at 19 years of age to the love of her life, Harold Mathews Junior on April 14, 1973. She worked for 27 years as a dental hygienist before starting her own catering business that blossomed into an event and wedding business, which also served as a central hub for countless gatherings of friends and family. Being together with her family and friends was always a priority to her. Debbie was also a member of CrossPoint Church. While she is at peace now after a life full of graciously serving and loving others, Debbie will be deeply missed by those she leaves behind. She will always be remembered for her sincere faith in Jesus, selflessness, inclusive hospitality, and abundant love for others. She had a knack for bringing people together, especially over a beautiful southern meal. She made friends wherever she went and everyone she encountered felt welcomed and cared for. Debbie was always able to be endlessly positive and chose faith in the Lord in good and hard times. A visitation will be held for Debbie at CrossPoint Church in Argo, Alabama on Friday, February 2, 2024. Family visitation will begin at 10:30 am and friends will be welcomed starting at 12 pm. Immediately following the visitation, a service will be held at 2:30 pm. Debbie will be buried in Springville City Cemetery. After the burial, the family will continue to visit with friends at Mathews Manor during a reception at 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes living plants or funds for them to create “Nana’s Garden”. Debbie loved flowers and plants and they wish to create a place of living beauty in her honor.
