Jo Ann Thomas, 73, of Birmingham, AL, died on December 2, 2020 at peace in the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her and love her still. Born January 24, 1947 in Birmingham, Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents James Stewart and Myrtlene Goodwin Stewart and her grandson Zachary Thomas Luccasen. She is survived by her sisters Carol Burtchaell and Janice Johnsey (Jay), her children Kathleen Thomas (Andrew Luccasen) and Jake Thomas (Stephanie), and her grandchildren Caroline, Alexander, Emma, Tyler, and William. She also leaves behind her husband of 53 years, John Paul “J.P.” Thomas. Their home was filled with love for their Lord, their children, music, and for each other. J.P. met Jo Ann at Huffman Baptist Church where they were lifelong members. She attended Baylor University where she studied voice under Dr. Henry Bannon. She completed her bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Alabama. She loved cooking and was skilled in preparing ethnic cuisines and was well known as an exceptional hostess. She loved outdoor activities that included gardening, hiking, traveling, and golf. Jo Ann had a beautiful lyric soprano voice and the rare ability to touch the heart and soul of all those who had the pleasure of hearing her sing. Visitation will be at Deerfoot Memorial on Sunday, December 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and is drive by only. Please remain in your vehicle to greet the family. A drop box for cards or notes will be provided. A private graveside service for family will be held Monday at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Huffman Baptist Church or the American Diabetes Association.
