June 11, 1931 - August 11, 2019
Billy Joe Wright passed away on August 11, 2019, at the age of 88. He was born June 11, 1931, in Parrish, Alabama, and he married the love of his life, Sue Evans Wright, on September 10, 1955. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Joe was a faithful member of the Sun Valley Church of Christ in Center Point and a man full of good deeds. He devoted his life to the care of those around him and was regarded as a father by many outside of his family. Joe honorably served in the United States Army in the Korean War, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant, and he served in the National Guard for six years. He worked over 20 years as a milkman at White Dairy in Birmingham, AL, and he worked for Cliff Weil and at U. S. Pipe and Foundry North Birmingham Pipe Plant. Joe had an infectious personality and a remarkable sense of humor. He loved spending time with family and always knew how to have a good time. When it came to being with people, he always said “the more, the merrier.” Joe made delicious homemade ice cream, and he enjoyed singing with his family around the piano. He had piercing blue eyes and bore a strong resemblance to President Ronald Reagan. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Sue Wright; parents, Luther and Bessie Wright; siblings Willie Wright, Lester Wright, Evelyn Hughey, Jewel Douglas, Lorene Stocks, Betty Bridges, and Bob Wright; son Lester Wright; and grandson Jason Black. He is survived by children, Brenda (Scott) Hancock, Susan (Doug) Eblen, Scott Wright, and Cindy (Tom) Hargrove; grandchildren, Brooke (Bobby) Fox, Mandy Hancock, Stephen Black, Laura (Seth) Hayes, Ashley Black, Kathryn (Bryant) Marquis, Jonathan Hancock, Kayla Wright, and Caitlynn, Caroline, and Courtney Hargrove; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Matthew, Isaiah, Lydia, and Jacob Fox, Heston, Elizabeth, and Olivia Hayes, and Emma Marquis; and many nieces and nephews. In Revelation, we are told, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them.” Joe’s life was a shining example of faithful service and love for all, and as is said of the faithful in Hebrews 11, “though he died, he still speaks.” The family will receive friends on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Deerfoot Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, Alabama. Funeral service will be on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM with burial to follow at Clear Springs Cemetery in Oneonta, Alabama. Evans Flower Shop in Oneonta is providing the family flowers. You may contact them at (205) 274-2180 for your flower needs.
