Lt. Col Robert William Offutt

Robert W. Offutt, age 94 of Cleveland, Alabama, passed on surrounded by family on November 3, 2023. Robert was born in Atlanta, GA. Robert was preceded in death by Mary C. Offutt (who he considered the best girl ever); his parents, Robert A. Offutt and Berniece Offutt, son Robert “Bobby” W. Offutt, Jr.; grandsons Robert Matthew Offutt and Richard Russell Lawrence, Jr.; and great-grandson Joshua Blake Offutt. He is survived by his children Michael Scott Offutt (Lula), Cynthia O. Lawrence (Richard), and Douglas Kent Offutt (Michelle), grandchildren Michael Scott Offutt, Jr. (Amanda), Stephanie Lawrence Corley (Jonathan), Chelsea Offutt Wales (Jeremy), Racheal Scoggins, and Kimberly Hurtado (Silvestre), great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. After graduating from Emory University majoring in journalism, Robert joined the Air Force. He made the cut for Officer’s School and graduated. He achieved the rank of Lt. Col. in the Air Force Reserves before he retired after serving for over 30 years. He served as a Public Relations officer. He is a Korean War Veteran but fortunately served state side. He loved his country dearly. He was, as we are, very proud of his service. When not on duty with the Air Force, he was a talented salesman. This took him away from his family most week nights In 1981, he achieved his life-long goal of obtaining his private pilot license. Starting in 1995, Robert and Mary traveled the country in their RV visiting over 40 states, and Calgary, Canada. They have been to the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and the Gulf. Robert loved to travel so much he would have traveled practically full time, but Mary limited the trips to no longer than six weeks at a time. They were members of the Good Sams camping club and loved going to the Samborees. Robert was very competitive and joined in many game competitions with the club. He has many badges, ribbons and medals for all his wins. Robert kept a detailed journal of their travels that is full of information. It’s a treasure. Robert was a loving and generous Dad and PawPaw and leaves a hole in our hearts. He was a founding member of Grace Bible Church in Centerpoint, AL, where he served as a Deacon. He is currently a member of Locust Fork Baptist Church.
