Richard Dixon Hurst

Our hearts are both heavy and thankful as we celebrate the life of Richard Dixon Hurst — a devoted husband, remarkable father, loving “Pop,” and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. His strength, unwavering love, and enduring faith shaped not only his family but all who had the privilege of knowing him. Richard was tough, resilient in body and in spirit, yet tender in the way he loved. He gave generously, listened carefully, worked hard, and loved deeply. His quiet sense of humor could light up even the darkest days. Behind every act of strength was a heart full of compassion and humility. His spirit remained unshaken, his heart full of gratitude, and his faith deeply rooted in Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He was resilient, not just in the way he fought through physical pain, but in how he kept showing up. For decades, he battled an illness that would have broken most, yet he never let suffering steal his hope. He was prayerful, grateful, and courageous with his faith. He reminded us that hope and joy aren’t only found in the absence of hardship, but can exist in the midst of suffering with faith in Christ. Above all, Richard was a family man. His greatest joy and most profound legacy is the family he loved with his whole heart: his beloved wife of 37 years, Stephanie, and their five daughters, Amanda (Josh) Glidewell, Emily Hurst, Samantha (Ryan) Dobbs, Abby (Nathan) Feagans, and Elizabeth (Cameron) Williams. His girls were his pride and joy - the light of his life. He showed them strength, encouraged their faith, and left behind a legacy of love and perseverance they will carry forever. Richard was also a proud and loving “Pop” to his grandchildren: Addie and Judah Glidewell, and Banks Williams, who brought him immense joy and who will grow up knowing the depth of his love and the strength of his faith. His marriage to Stephanie was a testimony to lasting love, one built on trust, faith, and selfless devotion. She stood beside him in every season, cared for him with unwavering tenderness, and loved him through every trial. Their bond was one of quiet strength, deep affection, and enduring commitment. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Hurst (Glenda), who shared in his laughter, stories, and memories through the years. Richard loved the water and often found peace while fishing, a place where he could slow down and reflect on God’s goodness. But more than anything, he loved leading others to Christ. His life was a living testimony, not because he was perfect, but because he was faithful. Even in weakness, he radiated hope. Though we miss him deeply, we celebrate in the promise that he is now fully healed, rejoicing in the presence of Jesus, free from pain, restored and whole. His legacy is not only in the life he built, but in the love he gave, the faith he lived out, and the family he cherished. He leaves behind a rich inheritance of love, strength, and unwavering faith that will continue to shape generations. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Church of the Highlands Chapel, 4700 Highlands Way, Irondale, AL 35210. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, followed by the service at 2:00 PM. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Rest easy, Daddy. You’ve finished the race and made it home. We love you.
