Paul Robert Henderson

Paul Robert Henderson passed from this world on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, just six days shy of his forty-ninth birthday. Paul was born on June 24, 1970, in West Monroe, Louisiana, to Rory F. Henderson and Elizabeth Anne Stout Henderson. Although Paul only lived in Louisiana for three years, it was long enough to instill in him a lifelong love of cajun food, zydeco music, and LSU. As a toddler Paul moved with his parents to Hoover and then Homewood, AL and settled on the family-oriented, tree-lined street where his children still reside today. It was here that Paul grew up with his younger brother, Mark, attending Trinity United Methodist Church, where he ultimately earned the distinction of Eagle Scout. Paul attended Edgewood Elementary School, Homewood Middle School, and Homewood High School where he was a member of various clubs and the soccer team. Paul excelled at mathematics, in particular, and graduated with distinction. As a youth Paul also participated in swim team and various basketball teams where his love of all things sports related was cultivated. After graduation in1988, Paul attended Mississippi State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Paul was an exceptional student and ended his impressive undergraduate career with a near-perfect GPA when he graduated in 1993. While in college Paul met his wife, Jennifer, whom he married in 1996. After their wedding Paul and Jennifer chose to reside in Homewood where Paul continued his academic career at UAB and received his Master’s degree in Computer Science. Paul’s professional resume included IT jobs in several departments at UAB, Children’s Hospital of Alabama, and Compass Bank. In his later years, Paul was employed by Steak Out, Marco’s Pizza, Lyft, Uber, and Door Dash. During their life together Paul and Jennifer added three sons to their family: Jake Travis was born in 2000, Matthew Ross in 2001, and Nathan Redding in 2008. These boys were the light of Paul’s life and he reveled in teaching them all about the sports that he loved, including basketball, football, and soccer. He encouraged them to support his favorite teams of LSU, Mississippi State, Newcastle United, and of course, The Homewood Patriots. Paul encouraged the boys to try their best and enjoy any activity they chose to pursue. Paul was known to all as a music enthusiast. He enjoyed Classic Rock like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beatles, and Paul Simon. He also attended multiple live-music shows featuring Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band During his lifetime Paul relished the outdoors. Each winter he would travel with friends to various wilderness locations in the Southeast. He climbed Mt. Leconte with his family a few times and enjoyed trips to national parks, including the Grand Canyon. Paul was well known for his bright, blue eyes and his welcoming smile. He was a loyal friend and devoted to those who needed him. He volunteered to teach swimming lessons to underprivileged youth and to feed the homeless. He championed the cause of those less fortunate. He was a friend to all and he will be dearly missed. Paul is survived by his wife of twenty-three years, Jennifer W. Henderson; his children, Jake (19), Matthew (17), Nathan (10); his father and mother, Rory and Elizabeth Anne Henderson; his brother, Mark W. Henderson (Laura); brother-in-law, Nathaniel Wigginton (Brittany); nephew, Noah Henderson; and nieces, Katherine and Elena Henderson and Skylar and Jacy Wigginton; aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. Paul’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Shades Valley Community Church in Homewood, AL at 11 a.m. A time of visitation will precede the service beginning at 10 a.m. Dress will be casual. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Northstar Soccer Ministries-Paul Neville, P.O. Box 11512, Birmingham, AL 35202 and/or Sojourn Counseling-Beau Armistead, 300 Vestavia Parkway, Vestavia, AL 35216 or to the charity of your choice. ws, and his ultimate favorite, Phish.
