Mary Clonts Offutt

Mary Clonts Offutt, age 93 of Cleveland, Alabama, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 2, 2023. Mary was born in Bartow County, GA. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Dolphus A. Clonts and Lena Baker Clonts Keith; son Robert “Bobby” W. Offutt, Jr.; grandsons Robert Matthew Offutt and Richard Russell Lawrence, Jr.; and great-grandson Joshua Blake Offutt; sisters Etta and Ruby, and brother Mac. She is survived by her adoring husband of 73 years Robert W. Offutt, Sr.; children Michael Scott Offutt (Lula), Cynthia O. Lawrence (Richard), and Douglas Kent Offutt (Michelle); grandchildren Michael Scott Offutt, Jr. (Amanda), Stephanie Lawrence Corley (Jonathan), Chelsea Offutt Wales (Jeremy), Racheal Scoggins, and Kimberly Hurtado (Silvestre); many great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers Darlene, Jerri, Becky, James, and Glory; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was a woman of many talents including painting, sewing, cooking, and flower and vegetable gardening. She had a love of reading, learning, genealogy, but her favorite was taking care of her family. She was extremely giving, sacrificing her wants and time to make sure her family had what was needed. She made the best biscuits and rolls. The grandchildren loved her biscuits especially covered with honey, and people would be lined up waiting on her rolls at church and social functions. She truly enjoyed taking care of and watching her grandchildren grow up. The door and table were always opened to friends, family, and neighborhood kids. Mary was a fabulous seamstress. One of her specialties was making Robert’s suits, with people wanting to know who his tailor is so they could get a suit. Starting in 1995, Mary and Robert started traveling the country in their RV visiting over 40 states, and parts of Canada, but she limited trips to no more than six weeks so she could get back home to her family. She has been from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts and the Gulf. Mary and Robert have been together for 77 years, meeting when they were 17, and marrying at 21. Mary taught Sunday School, was bereavement hostess (taking care of many of the meals herself), taught many VBS classes, PTA mom, and many other services. There is so much more to say about who Mary is and all that she gave and did. She was a founding member of Grace Bible Church in Center Point, AL. She is currently a member of Locust Fork Baptist Church in Locust Fork, AL. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Deerfoot Memorial Funeral Home; visitation at noon, with service at 1 p.m.
